Department History

The Oklahoma Department was organized on September 18, 1926. The first Tent in Oklahoma was named Mary Todd Lincoln and was in Pawhuska, OK.

The Texas Department was organized August 20, 1929. The two departments were merged into one in 1953 during the term of National President Georgia Bone. There were combined Department Conventions, usually held in Oklahoma. However, Texas disbanded in 1972 when Grace Boderick was National President. The National Organization let the Oklahoma Department keep their original charter date of September 18, 1926. The Oklahoma Department has been issued a new Charter. The date the new charter was signed was May 12, 2001. It was signed by Nancy Singleterry, Beverly Estinbaum, Denise Crane, Alice Jacobs, Donna Talley, Carol Cox, Sharon Ballard, Joyce Grisham, and Velma Appl. On the bottom of the charter it states that the original charter was dated September 18, 1926.

The Oklahoma Department was 82 years old on September 18, 2008 and has had a total of 21 tents. Currently there are three Tents in Oklahoma.

National History

Incorporated December 12, 1885.

Olive Howald, Harriet Knapp, Eva Merwin, Frank Merwin and Bertha Martin organized on May 30, 1885 and held the first meeting on June 3, 1885 at the home of Eva Merwin, 419 First Street, S.E. Massillon, Ohio. Incorporated December 12, 1885, Massilion, Ohio. Signers of the Original Articles of Incorporation: Minnie F. King, Bertha M. Martin, Olive L. Howald, Eva Merwin and Amy Merrill. National Alliance of the Daughters of Veterans of the United States of America endorsed by The Grand Army of the Republic at the 34th Annual Encampment held in Chicago, Illinois, 1900. Name changed to Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War at the 35th National Convention held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, 1925. Name changed to Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865 at the 54th National Convention held in Des Moines, Iowa, 1944. Federal Charter granted by Public Law 99-172, December 9, 1985.
