Department President's Projects 2009-2011:
National Headquarters and Museum Expansion Fund,
Overseas Coupon Program for Military Families, &
Flag Afghan Raffle

Dear Oklahoma DUV Sisters,
We have chosen three projects for 2009 through 2011.

1. National Headquarters and Museum Expansion Fund: Monetary contributions to assist the National Organization for the expansion of National Headquarters. The Union Organization has many interesting items and objects that have not been displayed due to lack of space. The extra space which our new building will afford means we can bring these out to be enjoyed by all visitors.
2. Overseas Coupon Program for Military Families: This project should cost only stamp money and time for all of us. At our recent Department Conference I gave each tent a list of web sites where you can download coupons and you can also clip from your Sunday paper. You may adopt WHERE you wish to mail the coupons. The web sites www.ocpnet.org, www.couponstotroops.com, and http://thehouseholdhelper.com/frugal-living/military-overseas-coupon-program/ will guide you and tell you exactly how to adopt a base. The coupons will go to military families where ever they are stationed. This will help families with food costs and other expenses. This is something we can all do. Please keep track of the number of coupons you clip for reporting (Microsoft Excel Coupon Tracker & Printable PDF Coupon Tracker).
3. Flag Afghan Raffle: Proceeds from the raffle will go to the National President’s Project of furnishing the new building at headquarters. Department President's Project 2007-2009:
Quilts of Valor Foundation

The mission of the QOV Foundation is to cover ALL combat wounded service members whether physical or psychological with wartime quilts called Quilts of Valor (QOVs). The wounded service members from the War on Terror or Long War are to be considered first and foremost.

The second mission is to teach our children how to sew QOVs. This skill will teach sewing skills in addition to becoming civically involved and volunteering for the betterment of our nation.

A natural extension of our mission will be to link up with our coalition countries and see that their combat wounded are also covered.

When all is said and done what we are doing is providing a means by which our combat wounded can have a better life. This foundation will do whatever it takes to reach this goal.

This foundation is not about politics. It's about people.

Oklahoma Department Book:
A Memorial to the Union Ancestors of Oklahoma Daughters

We are glad to announce the 2007 National DUV Convention recognition of the Oklahoma Department publication, A Memorial to the Union Ancestors of Oklahoma Daughters. The Lulu Downey Calwalader Award was given for “the Department or Tent contributing the most research or accomplishment involving Civil War History.” The book was created by a Department-wide collaboration of members providing history of their Ancestor Veterans, ninety-two stories in all. Jae Jaeger and Carol Cox provided additional research and art work, publishing the book for Department members. Each veteran story is one 8.5" by 11" page and with references the book is 125 pages of information about our ancestors.

Oklahoma Department Members have placed the book in several area locations, including libraries at the Oklahoma Historical Society and Museum, Cleveland County Genealogical Society, Pontotoc County Historical and Genealogical Society, Pryor Public Library, Tulsa Genealogical Society, Tulsa City County – Genealogy Center Library, Sapulpa Public Library and Webster County Library in Missouri.

In the months to come, the brief biography of these outstanding Veterans and their families will also be posted. We think you will be pleased to find out about the extraordinary people, and significant accomplishments of our grand, great-grand and for some great-great grandparents. The veterans shared some common challenges and responded valiantly.
